Creating a new page

As with most things done in MediaWiki creating new pages can be accomplished in multiple ways. The method used will depend on the context of the page being created. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Starting_a_new_page provides additional information on page creation

Red link

The term "red link" refers to a new page link is placed into an existing page when the new page does not yet exist. Once editing of the current page is completed and the work saved the link to the new page will be red in colour (links to pages that do exist are blue). To create the new page the author needs only to click on the red link and MediaWiki will prompt to create the new page.

Using the URL

The URL (address in browser address bar) can be used to create a new page. To create a new page this way simply enter the address of the new page as the page's name. For example, to create a new page called "Calving Ease" enter the following in the browser's address bar,

http://wiki.icar.org/index.php/Calving_Ease

MediaWiki will prompt you to create a new page called Calving Difficulty. Notice the use of the underscore ("_") in place of spaces in the page's name.

Also, it is a best-practice to capitalize the first letter of each word in a page name

General guidance

  • Use system default fonts avoid changing fonts from the system default.
  • Use tables the tables feature, not images of tables. Tables generated in MS Word or other editors can easily be convereted to the MediaWiki tables mark up. There are several free web services to generate or convert tables including https://www.tablesgenerator.com/mediawiki_tables. More details are available in the SOP Tables page.
  • Use LaTex for equations, not images of equations. More details are available in the SOP Equations page.
  • Consolidate when possible. E.g., there are at least three different places that talk about animal identification; at least 2 places for parentage recording; 2 places for calving difficulty score; etc.
  • MSWord docx files can be converted to mediawiki a number of ways. A very good free conversion can be obtained at: https://alldocs.app/convert-word-docx-to-mediawiki-markup
